Today we explored a home in Manhattan Beach that felt more like a downtown style loft than your typical Manhattan Beach family home. Situated at 404 20th Street, a walk street in MB, is an architectural dime. Designed by famed architect Pat Killen, and completed in 2001, this home features exposed wooden ceilings, concrete brick walls, and roll up garage doors throughout the home.

On the first floor you have three unique bedrooms, and a patio area. The bedrooms are quirky, modern, and have built in furniture that looks like an Eames bookcase. The bathrooms in these rooms are super modern. They are built into the room, and not a separate space. Each of these downstairs rooms could easily be turned into an office if need to be. Also, outside from the bedrooms is small courtyard that is the perfect quiet reading spot. The stairs that take you up to the second and third floor are uniquely showcased in the entryway of the home. Up on the second story is where the family room area and the master bedroom reside. The master is situated at the back of the home, and is only accessible by walking through the closet/master bath. With it’s own fireplace and private balcony, the master bedroom is a spacious retreat from the rest of the open floor plan. The master bathroom is different than your typical one, with two sinks facing each other and with no mirror in front of the sink, which could be a problem for some people. But to make up for that, the master has an automatic toilet that looked pretty cozy. When we walked by, the toilet seat went up, ready for use! Up on the top floor you have the dining room, a huge chef’s kitchen, living room, and patio. This third floor is one big open room that really gives you that downtown loft feel, but unlike downtown, this room has an ocean view.

From the worn-in wood floors to the roll up garage-style doors, we love this house. It is truly unlike anything we have seen in our area and has a very “Venice Beach” style to it. We recommend this home for a couple or a single bachelor who works in the creative industry of Los Angeles. We also recommend it for someone who will appreciate the architecture and the creativity that oozes from the walls of this California-creation.
