A Better Home Thermostat | NEST.com

NEST, the home thermostat that doesn't totally suck!

If you're like me, when it comes to your home's thermostat, you hate it, haven't read the manual and find yourself adjusting the temperature settings throughout the day—but you're either too hot or too cold. Today, a Palo Alto start-up named Nest has announced their introduction of a self-learning, self-programming thermostat.

Developed by some ex-Apple folks, they asked themselves the all important question, why do we put up with thermostats that are impossible to use? There's got to be a better way. WIth the same mindset that brought us the iPod and iPhone, the Nest team sought to simplify the ubiquitous and mind-boglingly horrible programmable thermostat, and to create something that is actually usable by pretty much anyone.

Simplify, simplify, simplify
From a 5,000 foot view, the Nest Learning thermostat is vaguely  reminiscent of the super simple Honeywell thermostat that everyone of us grew up with in the 60's and 70's. Well, they're both round, right?. Compare the Nest and Honeywell devises to the rectangular, wall-mounted monuments to bad design that we all struggle with today. Unlike anything else on the market, the Nest is always learning and remembering your daily habits and temperature comfort range by adjusting the the single ring up or down. Maybe the Nest team can tackle my tv's remote next.

The Stupidity of the rectangular, programable thermostat
Days of the week, weekends, in the house, away from the house, nighttime settings, and morning settings can all be individually programmed. But, should the heater come on at 6, or 7? What about during the day? When should I switch over from cooling to heating? I can never decide. How about you? And, because touch-pads are super trendy, you also get a big, glowing night light that only serves to remind you that you were unable to correctly program your home's heating and cooling systems.

The WHY?
Lets not lose site as to the WHY in the thermostat equation. The programable thermostat came into being as a tool to control you heating and cooling expenses. According to Nest, only six percent of programmable thermostats are programmed.  Conversely, 94% of us have given up and adjust our heating and cooling systems manually. The Nest will save you money.
The Battle Field has been set
Get ready to see the market flooded by an onslaught of copycat thermostats. Nest has set the new standard, but more important, they've created a product that most home owners will want in their homes.

What's the Nest cost?
At almost $300 bucks, the Nest is not inexpensive. Actually, it's about 3 time more expensive than most Home Depot level thermostats. Maybe the price will come down overtime, we'll see. For me, the $299 is well worth the investment. Plus, there's an iPhone app that allows you to control the Nest from near and far. How cool is that.
